End of World War II
The beginning of the end of World War 2 started in 1945 when the Axis powers surrendered. On May 7th 1945 Germany surrendered to the Western Allies and to the Soviet Union on May 8th. This was just about a week after Hitler committed suicide. Before all of this happened the concentration camps were being discovered and liberated. The United States, Britain, and the Soviet Union were all involved in this liberation. The Soviets liberated the largest camp, Auschwitz. Following that they liberated camps in the Baltic states and Poland. The United states set free camps that were in Germany. Britain did so in North Germany.
On August 6th and 9th of the same year the United States dropped atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima Japan.This was the event that really made an impact on the war ending. Due to the bombing 140,000 people died in Hiroshima and 80,000 people in Nagasaki. Even after the initial drop of the bomb in Japan, thousands of lives continued to be lost due to the radiation from the bomb.It is estimated that 300,000 people lost their lives because of the bomb. After the attack on Japan, the Emperor made a radio announcement that they surrendered. On August 6th and 9thnnouncement on August 15, 1945 that he had surrendered. Their surrender was signed on September 2, 1945. President Truman officially declared an end to hostilities on December 31, 1946.
